Welcoming Indigenous students

The recruitment and retention of Indigenous students is a major goal of the University of Melbourne RAP.  In December 2014, 213 Indigenous students were enrolled at the University of Melbourne, 116 in undergraduate programs and 94 in graduate programs including 12 Research Higher Degree students. There were 3 students in non-award programs.

Based on the available enrollment date for 2015, it is estimated that there will be 236 Indigenous students studying at the University during first semester.

Indigenous students get opportunity to RISE

Interest in the annual RISE (Residential Indigenous Science Experience) has grown exponentially since the program was first offered in 2012. In November 2014, some 50 secondary students from across Australia joined the week-long camp aimed at inspiring students about the exciting and rewarding careers that can eventuate from studying science and maths.

Global campaigner represents Indigenous voices

At 22, Nayuka Gorrie is an experienced global campaigner for Indigenous and environmental rights. In 2012 she attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference as an Indigenous representative of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition. In 2013 Ms Gorrie was again chosen to represent Indigenous youth, this time at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.



Aspiring architect designing bright future at Cambridge

Bachelor of Environments graduate Sarah Rees was awarded the 2013 Charlie Perkins Scholarship to pursue graduate studies in architecture at the University of Cambridge.
The first in her family to complete a university degree, Ms Rees says the opportunity to study at Cambridge has changed the way she sees her future.

Summer leads to winter for Indigenous researchers

For over 10 years, Indigenous graduates from all over Australia have gravitated to Melbourne to hone their research skills in a highly successful summer intensive program. From 2012 students taking the summer school were eligible to receive a Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research. A Graduate Certificate in in Indigenous Research and Leadership will be offered as a Winter Intensive from 2013¿

VCA graduate Ben McKeown won two major awards in 2011, and then oversaw the installation at the State Library of Victoria of the Australian Tapestry Workshop's transformation of his image "Spring Street End".¿
